Artist: Hank Yamelst from Pukaist (Nlaka'pamux Territory)
Material: Cedar frame, animal hide
Diameter: 14"

Depth: 3"

This is a traditional Nlaka'pamux hand drum for ceremony and gatherings.

Hank Yamelst uses local deer and elk hide, which he hunts and tans himself. He stretches the fresh hide over a wood frame until it is taut, and then laces and ties the skin.

According to Hank, the sound of a drum depends on many things: on the type and age of the animal, which part of the hide is used, the temperature of the drum, and other variables. He recommends bringing the drum to heat, such as an outdoor fire, for the clearest sound.

These drums are ready to ship. We recommend using your hand or a traditional red willow drumstick to play the drums; if you don't have your own, send us a message to see what we have in the shop.

Hank can also create a custom made drum for you. Please contact us for more information.
